What is the difference between slab on ground and suspended slab?

A slab on ground is a concrete floor cast directly on compacted earth, while a suspended slab is a reinforced concrete floor supported by beams or stumps above ground, typically required on sloping or elevated sites.

Two foundation methods dominate residential construction in Australia: the slab on ground and the suspended slab. The slab on ground involves pouring concrete directly onto compacted soil or prepared ground level, creating a single structural floor that forms both the foundation and the internal floor surface. A suspended slab, by contrast, is a reinforced concrete floor that spans between support points (usually concrete beams, timber posts, or steel columns) elevated above the ground.

Slabs on ground work well on flat, stable sites where the ground can be properly prepared and compacted. They are typically the faster and lower-cost option for level blocks. Suspended slabs become necessary where ground slopes significantly or where the site has poor soil stability, groundwater issues, or where fill materials cannot be reliably compacted. On sloping terrain, a suspended slab allows the structure to span across the slope rather than requiring extensive and costly earthworks.

The choice also affects site access and drainage. Suspended slabs create an underfloor space that can accommodate services, ventilation, and stormwater systems. In areas prone to flooding or rising damp, the clearance under a suspended slab provides better protection than a slab sitting close to ground level. Builders working on split-level or sloping blocks often specify suspended slabs because they reduce excavation demands and adapt more flexibly to uneven topography.
