About this directory
What this is
Australia-wide Custom Home Builder Guide lists 300 custom home builder businesses from across the country in one place, so people planning a build can compare options without trawling dozens of separate websites. It’s built for homeowners at the early, confusing stage of a custom build: working out who actually operates in their area, what they specialise in, and how they stack up against similar builders nearby.
This is an independent directory and comparison resource. We also generate enquiries for local providers: when you ask to be matched with a builder, we pass your enquiry to providers relevant to your request and may receive a referral fee for doing so. That referral relationship is disclosed on the quote page itself, and it never touches scores or earned rankings. Those two functions, the directory and the enquiry matching, are kept deliberately separate so one doesn’t distort the other.
Where the listing data comes from
Every builder profile starts from public business data: registration details, service areas, trade specialisations, and similar factual basics. We then synthesise recent Google reviews for that business to build a picture of overall sentiment and recurring themes. We don’t republish review text, and we don’t quote reviewers. Instead, we link out to the business’s Google listing so you can read the original reviews yourself and form your own view.
How rankings are earned
Rankings come from a published rubric applied consistently to the data and review sentiment we hold on each business, nothing else. There’s no manual override and no way to buy a better position. You can read the full scoring criteria on our /methodology/ page, which sets out exactly what’s measured and how it’s weighted.
Businesses can request corrections to their own factual details, such as service areas, contact information, or trade credentials, and we welcome that since it keeps the directory accurate. What a business cannot do is edit its own score, sentiment reading, or ranking position. That separation is what keeps the rankings worth trusting.
Sponsorship, when it exists
Some pages may carry a clearly labelled “Sponsored” placement, shown in its own section, separate from the earned ranking below it. Sponsorship affects visibility only. It never changes a business’s score, sentiment, or where it lands in the ranked list.
Who’s behind it
The directory is published by Barnfire Pty Ltd. Editorial oversight and the ranking rubric sit with Nathan Sherry, Managing Editor, who maintains the scoring and reviews how it’s applied across all 300 listings. The site itself was built by Nathan, a former accountant who has spent more than a decade building and running business websites, which shapes the practical, numbers-first approach behind the methodology.
Listing data is refreshed monthly, and each profile carries a “last verified” stamp so you can see at a glance how current that particular entry is rather than assuming the whole directory updates at once.

FAQ
- Does this site build houses or act as a builder itself?
- No. It's a directory and comparison resource that lists independent builder businesses and can pass on enquiries to providers relevant to your request.
- Can a builder pay to rank higher?
- No. Rankings follow a published rubric applied to public data and review sentiment. Sponsorship, when shown, is labelled separately and doesn't change the earned ranking.
- Can a listed business change its own review sentiment or score?
- No. A business can correct factual details like service areas or contact info, but scores, sentiment, and rankings are set independently and can't be edited by the business.
- How often is the information updated?
- The full directory is refreshed monthly, and each listing shows a last verified date so you can see how current that specific profile is.
- Where do the reviews come from?
- We synthesise recent Google reviews to gauge sentiment but don't republish review text. Each profile links out to the business's Google listing so you can read reviews in full.
