What is cut and fill?

Cut and fill is the excavation and redeposition of soil to create a level or stepped platform for a house foundation on sloping ground.

On sloping sites across Australia, cut and fill earthwork reshapes the land by excavating soil from higher points and moving it downslope to fill lower areas. This process creates a stable, level pad for the house foundation or produces deliberate steps where the terrain is steep. The result is a usable building platform where one did not naturally exist.

Builders use cut and fill to manage sites with gradients that range from gentle slopes to sharp drops. The technique reduces the need for expensive retaining structures in some cases and can minimise site disturbance by keeping moved earth on the property rather than trucking waste away. It also allows the builder to position the house footprint where it makes best sense for access, views, or drainage, rather than being locked into where the natural ground happens to sit.

Getting cut and fill right matters because poor execution leads to settlement, cracking, or water pooling under the new pad. The soil being cut must be suitable for reuse, and the amount of cutting and filling must balance reasonably to avoid excessive surplus or shortage. Local soil type, rainfall patterns, and site drainage all influence how the work should be done.

Builders with experience on sloping blocks understand how to assess ground conditions before quoting and coordinate cut and fill with drainage design so the new pad performs well over time.
